The improved quality of water in the river in the 1980’s and large-scale planting of trout and salmon have resulted in a plentiful stock of fish. 36 different species of fish, plus lampreys and lamperns that belong to cyclostomes, have been encountered in the River Aura.

The most common catch for line and hook fishermen are roach, bream and other cyprinids, as well as perch.
Fly fishers catch mostly trout and salmon, as well as some rainbow trout that come to the river from the sea. Late in the autumn there are also plenty of large migratory powans in the river below the Halistenkoski rapids.

A more exotic species in the river is carp, the biggest ones have weighed five kilos. The average weight of trout in the river is over 3 kg and of salmon over 6 kg! Fishing is easiest by the Halistenkoski rapids in Turku and the Nautelankoski rapids in Lieto. Guidance and fishing permits are available for both.

The Halistenkoski rapids
Location: Turku, downstream from the Halistenkoski rapids to the Martinsilta bridge.
Types of fishing: Spinner, fly fishing, line and hook.
Permit prices: 5 eur/day, 10 eur/week, 50 eur/calendar year. (persons under 18 years of age: 2 eur/day, 5 eur/week, 10 eur/calendar year).
Sale of permits: City of Turku Office of Environmental Protection, fishing gear shops in Turku, the River Aura Information Centre at the Miller’s House.

The Nautelankoski rapids
Location: Lieto as., Nautelankoski nature and museum area.
Types of fishing: Fly fishing.
Permit prices: 6 eur/3 h, 60 eur/year.

NB: The Nautelankoski rapids is reserved for fly fishing only, and there is room for 10 fishermen at a time. The time for fishing must always be reserved in advance at Shell service station in Lieto as, tel. (02) 4876 082.

Location: Centre of the municipality of Aura.
Types of fishing: Spinner, fly fishing.
